During the Vedic period Indian women enjoyed equal status with men, but today thousands of years later have we made any progress or this Women’s Day is just a celebration in name???
Standing at the famous Belur temple, I am very impressed by the marvellous carvings but there is something which is troubling me. I see statues of dancing ladies almost half naked carved all over the temple exterior and interior. No No, it’s not that I am offended by the bare bodies of the statues but instead a thought, Were we so open minded around 1000 years ago??? Did women had so much freedom to come out so bold???
If the answer is Yes then why have we not progressed ahead and instead moving backwards when it comes to women freedom today. Why we still have highest number of female foeticide, why many girls are still struggling to complete basic education, why it’s a big issue when it comes to working, why girls are still married away by parents without consent, why are we always feeling unsafe because of never ending rape cases???
Frankly speaking I do not have an exact answer but a opinion, that as much as men are responsible for all this so are we Women. If we women take a vow to support other women as a sister, friend, mother, daughter, mother-in-law and sister-in-law we can change all this and move ahead. Because even though we are all different we are still the same, We are a Women. Then in true sense we will be celebrating Women’s Day!!!
Please share your opinion on how we can make a difference and work towards women empowerment…
